A 15cm smudge stick of black sage, tied into a bundle for burning. Smudging is an old practice: the bundle is lit, the flame is blown out, and the smouldering leaves give off a herbal smoke. Many people burn sage before meditation or prayer.
Keep it with a bowl or dish for catching the ash; a feather or fan for wafting the smoke is optional. It sits well on an altar or meditation shelf.

Lighting it
Light the tip of the bundle, let it catch for a few seconds, then gently blow out the flame so the leaves smoulder. Hold it over a heat-resistant bowl or dish to catch the ash, and press the tip firmly into the dish to put it out when you have finished.
